East Kilbride 70th - A Year of Celebration

East Kilbride 70th - A Year of Celebration

East Kilbride is celebrating its 70th year as a New Town this year. The town grew from a small village to one of Scotland’s largest towns, with extensive leisure facilities, shops, greenspace, schools and housing. It was built to ease overcrowding in Glasgow’s East End. SLLC has been working in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and East Kilbride Heritage Group in preparation for some key nostalgic events. This has involved a ’70 voices’ project where 35 adults and 35 children were interviewed about their experience of life in East Kilbride. East Kilbride Central Library will host various exhibitions as a result of this project. See below for events taking place across SLLC’s East Kilbride facilities and venues to mark East Kilbride’s 70th birthday.

Edinburgh International Book Festival Presents "ReimagiNation: East Kilbride"
The world's biggest celebration of the written word comes to East Kilbride! The Edinburgh International Book Festival pops up across the town on the second stage of ReimagiNation, a tour of Scotland's New Towns marking 70 years since the passing of the New Towns Act and the reshaping of Scotland following the Second World War.
Some of the best authors around take part in inspiring, eye-opening and entertaining events for audiences of all ages. Launching on the evening of Saturday 19 August, East Kilbride Arts Centre comes alive with words and laughter as events including Unbound, the Book Festival's free cabaret caper, bring local voices and international writers together on stage.
Through Sunday and Monday there is a cluster of great events and workshops for adults, families and schools across both The Village Theatre and the village centre itself, including performances of Ishbel McFarlane's interactive theatre experience Plan. Both indoors and out there's a range of drop-in activities, stalls and attractions to visit, including a temporary bookshop.
Full programme and ticketing details will be announced in June - follow the Edinburgh International Book Festival on social media.
ReimagiNation: East Kilbride is presented in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and The Village Centre, and is supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery.
