The Buddha as the World's First Great Psychotherapist


Join renowned mindfulness author and teacher Martin Stepek to learn how Guatama Siddartha, better know as the Buddha, was actually a great pioneer in the field of mental wellbeing and happiness, rather than the founder of a religion. Having studied Buddhism and the Buddha's original teachings for twenty years, Martin Stepek is keen to see the Buddha repositioned in the world as a great intellect and innovator. This event will include a short mindfulness meditation.

Martin Stepek is one of Scotland's most respected and popular mindfulness teachers. Author of two books on the subject and writer of a weekly column on the subject in the Sunday Herald, he is also a prize-winning poet, and the recipient of the prestigious Polish award, the Gold Cross of Merit. His wide-ranging studies have included Buddhism, East Asian Poetry, and the neuroscience of happiness and peace of mind. He serves on the Choose Life group, the pan-Lanarkshire suicide prevention body.

Scottish crime writer RJ Mitchell will be visiting Lanark Library to talk about his work.

Brought up in Stirling, Robert developed a keen interest in history, particularly medieval, from an early age and graduated MA Hons in British, European and Scottish Medieval History before joining Strathclyde Police.

The Thoroughgood novels, comprising Parallel Lines (2010), The Hurting (2012), The Longest Shadow (2013), The Shift (2016) and The Blood Acre (2017) is a gritty Glaswegian crime thriller series with Gus Thoroughgood in various stages of his police career tackling psycopathic gang leaders, gangland feuds and terrorist attacks.
