Royal Burgh of Lanark Pipe Banner
The Pipe Banner on display in Lanark Library is one of eight pipe banners presented to the 1st Battalion of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) regiment on the 23rd April 1960 by Lanark County Council. Pipe banners are embroidered flags used to decorate bagpipes at formal or state occasions. This one represents the Royal Burgh of Lanark and shows the coat of arms. The crest of The Cameronians (S.R.) is embroidered on the reverse side of the banner.
The eight banners were presented by Provost Stoddart of Lanark and received by the Colonel of the Regiment, General Sir Horatius Murray. The ceremony took place on a beautiful sunny day at the bottom of Lanark High Street. Each of the eight banners was attached to bagpipes and paraded by the Pipers of the 1st Battalion in front of a crowd of guests and spectators.
