Rutherglen Town Crier’s Bell
The Rutherglen Town Crier’s bell on display in Rutherglen Library dates from 1879. During the late 1800s and early 1900s it was used by well-known, and possibly most photographed Ru’glonian, Archie Yuill (1855-1929). Archie was Rutherglen’s last Town Crier and held many positions in the town, including Town Drummer, Lamplighter, Fire Master and Burgh Officer. He was also one of the founding members of the Ru’glonian Society, formed in 1906.
Archie appears in many photographs of Rutherglen from the 1880s until the 1920s. He was a very popular figure in Rutherglen, as was demonstrated by the hundreds of people who lined the streets at his funeral procession through Rutherglen in 1929.
