Thomas Grant "The Old Steeple"
Oil on Canvas
By Thomas Grant, 1913
This oil painting shows the old steeple of St Mary the Virgin's church in Rutherglen in winter. The steeple is thought to date to around the year 1400 and is all that now remains of a much earlier church on the site.
The artist has focused mainly on the snow-capped steeple and the graveyard in the foreground, leaving the buildings in the background hazy and without detail. This gives the effect of the steeple standing in isolation, when in fact it is situated next to the busy Main Street.
Little is known about the artist, Thomas Grant, although we do know he painted several scenes from in and around Rutherglen and from other areas in Scotland, such as Stirling and Edinburgh.
