Level 1 - beginners

Level 1- beginners swimming lessons at South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture

Entry Criteria

Physical

  • 4 years of age minimum
  • Able to be in water

Psychological

  • Be part of a class
  • Participate without a carer or 1-1 assistance being required

Aims

  • Entry to and exit from water
  • Water awareness and safety
  • Develop basic kicking and pulling movements
  • Swim without artificial aids
  • Introduction to basic water skills and games

Exit Criteria

  • Essential
  • Swim width of tank unaided on front
  • Enter and exit water without assistance
  • Put face in water
  • Kick width of tank on back with or without float

Desirable

  • Float on back unaided
  • Front crawl kick with float width of tank

Curriculum

  • Enter and exit water safely
  • Use float on front and back
  • Regain balance front and back
  • Put face in water/blow bubbles
  • Multi stroke development (front crawl, back crawl and where appropriate breaststroke)
  • Push and glide on front
  • Water skills including jumping in, breaststroke kick movement, picking objects off bottom of pool, swimming through hoops, etc
