Rent - School Edition 2 - 5 October 2024 7:30pm and Saturday 2:30pm Wed/Sat matinee £17, Thurs £18 and Fri/Sat £20 Village Theatre East Kilbride
This iconic pop rock musical is set in the East Village of New York city, and is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Running for 12 years on Broadway, Rent has songs that rock, and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Based loosely on Puccini's ‘La Boheme’, the narrative follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists, struggling to survive in New York's Lower East Side. Set in the 1990’s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS, this musical narrates the physical and emotional complications of the disease that pervades the lives of these young people. The musical centres around Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, and his flatmate Roger, a musician, and their diverse group of friends and how these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts.
Rent School Edition is exuberant, passionate, gritty and ultimately uplifting. It deals with themes of love, loss and living life to the full, with no regrets. It delivers messages of acceptance, resilience and hope and is as relevant today as when first opened on Broadway in 1996.
Harlequin is delighted to be back for their third consecutive year at the Village Theatre with Rent, featuring well known songs such as La Vie Boheme, Out Tonight and Seasons of Love.

Never lose the dream...
It’s 1968 and The Fab Four are at the top of the charts. In Glasgow’s East End six schoolboys are about to move on to University and the university of life (or a wife!) but harbour a dream of becoming “The Sensational Six” with their love of The Beatles, The Stones and all the songs that are Top of The Pops. Songs of love’s young dreams and dreamers.
Will they be Top of The Pops...or will their schoolboy ways turn their dreams into a nightmare? Will they be a hit, or will the reality of tenement life make them miss out?
Full of 60s throwbacks and 60s sounds, including original songs by the band, this is a charmingly funny and poignant, but true story.
